Meet Matt Slingo (Matty) who considers himself a Complete Function Hire ‘all-rounder’. Matty’s hard work and ‘can do’ attitude sees him managing various important parts of our business so that we can continue to deliver amazing events all over Melbourne.

Growing up in Shepparton, Matty has always been a ‘Jack of all trades’. Matty is one of those rare sorts that is great at lots of things. Today, Matty is an integral part of the Complete Function Hire team across a number of areas including IT, transport and operations (as well as always pitching in wherever he is needed in true Complete Function Hire spirit).

When he is not working hard on delivering an amazing wedding or event, Matty enjoys watching the footy and having a laugh with family and friends.

On this month’s edition of ‘Who’s Who at Complete Function Hire’ we get to know Matty and find out why he is so great at what he does.

How long have you been involved in the wedding and events industry?

Since 2003.

First gig?

RMIT Conference in Melbourne.

Most memorable event or wedding you have worked on at Complete Function Hire and why?

We are lucky to work on such a wide range of events at Complete Function Hire which is one of the reasons I love the job so much. One that stands out for me is the Opera in the Market event where we supply equipment and furniture hire for around 2000 guests theatre style and 450 guests for a really amazing dinner function. This event is really special and probably one of the most rewarding to be a part of. We get to work closely with the team from Fred and Ginger Catering and St Vincent’s to deliver this awesome charity event. There is a lot to organise in terms of logistics, running schedules, bump in and bump out requirements as well as operating all the audio visual equipment during the concert. Being part of such a large event is always hard work to ensure everything is perfect but it is also a lot of fun and very satisfying to see the end result.

What do you enjoy about working at Complete Function Hire?

There is a great team spirit at Complete Function Hire – we all work hard but also know how to have a laugh. It’s a great team and friendly environment to work in.

Favourite hobbies?

Snowboarding, spending time with family and friends, attempting to teach myself guitar and going to the footy.

How long have Complete Function Hire and Fred and Ginger Catering been working together on weddings and events?

We have been working on events with Fred and Ginger since 2006 and have developed a strong relationship over this time – our team always enjoys working closely with the Fred and Ginger team. We work together on offsite events as well as weddings and events at venues all over Melbourne.

Why do you love working with the team at Fred and Ginger?

Fred and Ginger have a great team and are easy to work with.  They also look after some of our own events like our 15-year Celebration and Staff Trivia night. We just have that relationship of working in partnership and helping each other out.

Favourite item on the Fred and Ginger Menu?

Impossible to choose a favourite! Everything is absolutely delicious and always so beautifully presented.

niclemasmallWe pride ourselves on our personal approach and this is all thanks to the team of legends we work with – The Complete Function Hire Team. This month we took five minutes out to chat with Complete Function Hire ‘All Rounder’, builder of our hair pin and paddle furniture ranges and all round great bloke, Nic Lema. When he is not rocking out to Pantera, he is working hard with the team to ensure our furniture gets built to the highest standards and that events run smoothly each and every time.

How long have you been involved in the wedding and events industry?

6.5 years

What is the craziest thing that has every happened whilst working on a wedding or event and what did you do to resolve it?

Whilst setting up a live digital TV service on a plasma TV at the Melbourne Supper Club for OAKS day in 2013, I couldn’t get a good enough signal from the 6 metre aerial and the big race was about to start! All eyes were on me to fix it before the jump. I liked to think I resolved what could have been a huge issue by remaining cool, calm and collected. From doing so many AV jobs, I know it’s always best to pack a laptop to test our screens and I was able to get a live feed via the internet. All sorted and all in time for the race!

Weirdest place you have ever dropped off furniture or equipment for an event?

Not a weird place but a very last minute event in a far away place! We got a call just before Valentine’s Day 2014 from the Sydney Mayor’s office needing our paddle furniture for a special Chinese New Year event.  I loaded up a 3 tonne truck the next morning and drove straight to Sydney.  I drove up on the Friday and dropped the Complete Function Hire truck at the event site and after a short nap, I was back in the morning to set up and then back again at midnight to bump out before returning back to Melbourne. The team here love to be able to accommodate last minute requests for special events and it was thrilling to be able to deliver!

What do you enjoy best about working at Complete Function Hire?

The variety of work – we work on so many different events from intimate wedding ceremonies to huge major events – there’s something different every day.

I also love the relaxed environment and working outdoors with such a great team.
